Skolen ved Sundet
Skolen ved Sundet was originally designed by Kaj Gottlob and built in the late 1930s. The school is architecturally striking, and as it now requires expansion, several new buildings have been constructed around the historic main building. Since the existing school is a listed structure, the extension has been designed as independent buildings located on the western part of the site. To avoid overshadowing the protected main building, all functions that can operate below ground level have been placed underground. The aim has been to create a child-friendly, contemporary school that maintains a sense of kinship with the original architecture and fosters a strong atmosphere of community.
The new buildings incorporate architectural qualities from Kaj Gottlob’s original design, contributing to the experience of a modern, updated school campus. While the original school from the 1930s is composed of uniform, structured classrooms, the new buildings offer flexible layouts that support varied teaching methods, play, movement, and activity.
The communal areas are connected by a central staircase, which in some places functions as seating steps and can be used for learning. Room furniture creates smaller zones within the shared spaces, and the use of glass ensures a sense of transparency throughout the building.
Stripe panels on the walls and integrated into the room furniture help ensure good acoustics in environments where play and noise are part of everyday life. The panels are custom-designed in peeled pine, which harmonizes beautifully with the other materials and adds a calming and softening effect.
